Point Cloud

Many organizations are looking for an easy way to tap into the wealth of information in their LiDAR and point cloud datasets. But the massive size of these files and interoperability challenges often make it impossible to use and share this highly accurate, "sensed" data.

Search these scenarios to find examples of

  • Transforming LiDAR data into the coordinate system and format you require
  • Integrating LiDAR with GIS, CAD and raster data to create value-added datasets for decision making
  • Creating automated, repeatable tasks that transform millions of points in seconds

Note: The term “point cloud” is really an umbrella term for LiDAR, laser scanning, sonar data, and others, because it's the underlying geometry type collected by all of these devices. No matter what you call these datasets, FME can help you access the data so you can use and share it. In FME 2011, we added support for  four formats that are either exclusively point cloud formats (LAS and POD) or support them along with other geometries (our own FFS format) or can be interpreted as a point cloud or a set of individual points (XYZ).

There are also articles about the various transformers which were added for Point Cloud support. If there is some functionality which you would like to see supported, please contact is via our support webpage
