Question

What licensing methods are available?

Answer

There are two main licensing methods....

  1. Fixed licenses (aka Node-locked or CRC license)
  2. Floating licenses
A node-locked license means that FME will be licensed to work on a single computer only. The registration wizard generates a unique registration key for that computer which we use to create the license. Therefore if you install FME on a different computer the same license will not work! For example, to license FME on five different computers you would need five node-locked licenses.

A floating license means that a single computer is provided with a number of licenses and acts as a server by issuing these licenses to any other computer that requests one. So you set up your license server, install FME on as many computers as you like and license them by pointing to your license server. Every time FME is started on a computer the server issues a license provided there is one still available. When a computer closes FME that license is returned. For example, you have a 5 seat floating license and 30 workstation computers. Each workstation has FME installed. Any workstation can run FME, but only a maximum of 5 at any one time. This is often a method by which a company will share a single license throughout its employees.

Notes:
  • By default all evaluation licenses will be of the node-locked type unless you specify otherwise.
  • To install FME on a server for use with a thin-end client (for example a Citrix/Winframe installation) you will need to use FME Floating licenses.
