Question

FAQ on 64-bit Computing and FME

Answer

Q) Can 32-bit FME be run on a 64-bit machine?

A) Yes, the standard 32-bit FME can be run on a 64-bit machine.

Because of the system architecture, and the ability to use up to 4GB of memory if required (32-bit has a default 2GB limit), FME should run considerably faster than on a regular 32-bit machine.

Q) Is there a specific 64-bit version of FME?

A) Yes, although not all formats and functionality are (or can be) included. Please see the formats page on Safe.com to see which formats are supported on 64 Bit. ESRI Geodatabase is currently not available as a 64 bit version.

Performance improvements are likely only on machines with more than 4GB of RAM. Ask your account manager if FME for Windows 64 bit is suitable for your needs.

Q) My Workspace is reading or writing to Oracle - what client do I need?

A) Depends

If you are running 32-bit FME on a 64-bit machine then you need a 32-bit client.

If you are running the 64-bit FME Engine on a 64-bit machine then you need a 64-bit client.

You also need to install the 32-bit FME into some directory other than "C:\Program Files (x86)" as the Oracle client has an issue with path names which have parentheses "()" in them
