Symptoms

Receiving an error "Unable to reach FLEXlm server XXXXX." when starting FME.

Cause

The Client Machine is unable to communicate with the FME License Server, either because the FME License Server is not running correctly, or because communication is not correctly set up for the client.

Resolution

1. Ensure that the FME License Server machine has a safe.lic file in the .../FlexServer folder.
2. Verify the safe.log file shows that the License Server is serving licenses.
3. Go through the licensing wizard on the client machine and ensure that the License Server name is being entered correctly.
4.  Check if the client machine is able to telnet (run > cmd > telnet [PORT]), and if it's not able, you will need to specify a secondary port on the VENDOR safe line, ensuring that port is open through the firewall.
**Generally a random 2nd port is used without issue.
